Columbia Burbank basketball team makes State B Tournament a family affair

SPOKANE, Wash. — Head coach Todd Schumacher has coached the Columbia Burbank Coyotes basketball team for 14 seasons, but this year brings a unique twist: three of his players are his own sons.

Mason, Brody and Trent Schumacher share the court with their father, creating a family dynamic unlike any other in high school basketball.

And this week the family is competing in the annual State B tournament in the Spokane Arena.

Their mother, Meggen Schumacher, cheered from the stands for both her boys and her husband.

“It’s definitely nerve wracking. But it’s fun,” Meggen Schumacher said. “They’re good about just playing off of each other. And know where each other’s at, and I really just have so much fun watching them.”

The tournament experience extended beyond the Schumacher family. Meggen wore a shirt honoring Colfax basketball coach Reece Jenkin, who passed away from cancer last week.

“Really just cheering for them and supporting them because that’s actually what this is all about,” she said.

The gesture showed the special camaraderie between two small school communities.

Todd Schumacher said the team bond runs deep.

“I’ve known these kids since they were in elementary school or younger. So the whole team kind of is one family really right now,” he said.

Columbia Burbank’s season ended with a loss to Northwest Christian in overtime.

Despite the loss, the Schumacher family says they’ll look back fondly on this week.

“This has been a great experience, a great year. Play hard, play together,” she said.
