Colfax bridge lane restrictions may impact Apple Cup travelers

COLFAX, Wash. – The State Route 26 bridge in Colfax will see lane restrictions starting Friday, Sept. 19, after its concrete barrier was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), crews will install new barriers to protect the damaged section.

This work, declared an emergency by WSDOT, will require temporary closure of the SR 26 bridge. Traffic will be rerouted to US 195, with flaggers managing alternating traffic near the Chevron gas station.

The work is expected to be completed by 4 p.m. Once finished, the bridge will reopen with narrowed lanes. The previous total width of 26 feet will be reduced to 22 feet, with each lane being 11 feet wide until the bridge is replaced.

The SR 26 bridge, built in 1938, is set for replacement as it has been deemed structurally and functionally obsolete. Originally scheduled for replacement in late 2025, the project has been delayed to the 2029-2031 biennium due to funding pauses.

With the 117th Apple Cup between Washington State University and the University of Washington in Pullman on Saturday, Sept. 20, travelers are advised to stay on SR 26 to the US 195 junction instead of navigating through local neighborhoods.
