Coeur d’Alene monitors for measles after positive wastewater tests

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The city is keeping a close eye on measles following two positive wastewater tests for the virus in late July and early August.

However, there have been no confirmed cases since those tests, and no additional positive tests have occurred.

Health officials are unsure if the virus was from a resident or a visitor. With schools reopening soon, Idaho is urging residents to consult their doctors about vaccinations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that measles is preventable through vaccination.

Dr. Christine Hen emphasized the importance of vaccination, saying, “Get up to date. It is safe. It does prevent measles, and if you’re going to be traveling or, of course, as school approaches, as your kids start to go to school, we do recommend you just make sure you’re up to date.”

Measles are highly contagious, and Dr. Hen advises those who suspect they might be sick to contact their healthcare provider before seeking treatment to prevent spreading the virus.

For more information on measles and vaccination, consult your healthcare provider or visit the CDC’s website.
