Coeur d’Alene honors fallen firefighters as part of national tribute next week.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and other community buildings in Kootenai County will be lit up red next week as part of a national tribute to firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood will be among the 204 firefighters who died in the line of duty that will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland on May 3.

Morrison and Harwood died during the ambush on Canfield Mountain last summer.

“Lighting our community in red is a powerful symbol of remembrance and respect,” said Interim Fire Chief Bill Deruyter of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department. “It’s a way for all of us to stand together and honor the sacrifice of firefighters who gave their lives in service to others. This year, it holds even deeper meaning as we remember Battalion Chiefs Morrison and Harwood, whose legacy will forever be part of our department and our community.”

Community members are welcome to participate in the annual Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters campaign by displaying red lights at their homes or workplaces.
