COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The city is coming together to honor its fallen heroes after a shocking attack on firefighters responding to a call on Canfield Mountain.
On June 29, Coeur d’Alene firefighters responded to a fire alert on the mountain. However, they were met with more than just flames.
Battalion Chief John Morrison of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department was shot and killed in the line of duty. Kootenai County Fire and Rescue also lost Battalion Chief Frank Harwood in the attack. Engineer David Tisdale was shot multiple times and continues to fight for recovery.
The incident has left North Idaho in shock. In a statement, the mayor and City Council expressed their profound grief, referring to the men as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to serve others. The statement also mentioned that city leaders would honor these brave individuals properly in the coming days.
They called on the community to stand united with first responders and their families during this time of mourning. While the shooting was not formally on the City Council’s agenda, leaders emphasized their support for the men and women who prioritize duty above self.
The Council meeting, scheduled for 6:00 p.m., will provide a platform for further discussions on how the city plans to support its first responders and honor those who have fallen.
