City set to sell building that houses Public Defenders office

SPOKANE, Wash — The city of Spokane is set to sell the building that houses the offices of the City of Spokane Public Defender.

The Real Estate Review Committee recommended that the building be declared surplus in October, 2025. The city council approved the recommendation making the building available to sell.

In March, the city entered into a contract to sell the building, located at 824 N. Monroe, for $2.1 million to Ryan Best and Beth Pierce. Best is an attorney in downtown Spokane with Best Law.

The contract stipulates that the buyer will lease back the building to the city for 112 months. It also gives the city three, 1-year lease options. The contract says the city will lease the building at a cost of $16.00 per square foot. The Spokane County Assessors office lists the building at 11,832 square feet.

Four News Now asked the city if the Defender’s offices would be moving.

“The City is working on identifying options for a permanent home, but the lease back option gives us stability while we explore. We’re very, very early on in that process.” Said Erin Hut, Director of Communication and Marketing for the city.

The Spokane City Council will vote Monday, May 18th to approve the sale.

Money from the sale of the building will go into the general fund.
