Cheney enforces new lawn watering rules to conserve water

CHENEY, Wash. – The City of Cheney has implemented a mandatory lawn watering schedule due to declining water levels, which went into effect on Wednesday.

“Due to the warmer weather and the loss of well 5 our production rates are down,” city representatives stated.

According to Cheney’s Water Department, it is crucial to keep reservoirs from further reductions, in order to ensure safe drinking water and to supply firefighting efforts in the area. These two goals are the main priorities of the Water Department.

Residents are now required to water lawns between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Those without automatic timers can water from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Officials advised limiting sprinkler use to one hour or less per day. For gardens and flowers, soaker hoses, drip systems or hand watering are recommended. Using mulch to retain moisture is also suggested.

The Water Department urged against leaving hoses running unattended and advised against watering on Mondays to allow water reservoirs to refill.
