COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Coeur d’Alene High School students will soon be allowed to use their cell phones during lunch.
This change comes after the student advisory group and district administrators reached a compromise, with the school board voting on it earlier this year.
The decision aims to address safety concerns highlighted by the advisory group. Their report found many students were leaving campus during lunch to use their phones.
Allowing phone use during lunch may help support mental health by providing students with connection and personal downtime.
By permitting phone use at lunch, the school hopes to reduce sneaky phone use during class. Students will have an appropriate time to check messages and make calls if needed.
Currently, cell phones are banned for all grades, kindergarten through 12, during school hours.
