Cardinal Blase Cupich reacts to election of new pope and shares conclave experience

SPOKANE, Wash. – Cardinal Blase Cupich, the former bishop of Spokane and current archbishop of the Chicago Diocese, shared his thoughts with NonStop Local on the election of a new pope.

Cupich was part of the conclave that elected Pope Leo. He noted Robert Francis Prevost was among several well-qualified candidates.

“We had a deep bench. There were a number of candidates that could have been considered. But his name seemed to rise in the voting that took place. And he seemed to check all the boxes,” Cupich said.

He emphasized the qualities Prevost brought to the role, emphasizing that Prevost was, “someone who was a pastor. An individual who could understand speaking on the global stage, who had international experience, who is multilingual, who had a depth of spiritual life and an education as well to speak to the issues of the day.”
