Canfield Mountain firefighters nominated for Idaho Medal of Honor

COEUR, d’ALENE, Idaho – Four firefighters who were ambushed in the June 29 Canfield Mountain attack were nominated for the Idaho Medal of Honor.

Battalion Chief , Battalion Chief , firefighter and Captain Fritz Wiedenhoff were all nominated for the award.

Harwood and Morrison were both killed during the . Tysdal was critically injured.

“The nominations include Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Battalion Chief John Morrison, who were killed in the line of duty, as well as Dave Tysdal and Fritz Wiedenhoff, whose heroic and selfless actions on scene helped prevent additional firefighters from unknowingly entering a deadly, active threat area, actions that likely saved lives and prevented further loss,” the Professional Firefighters of Idaho said in a post about the nominations.

Members from Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Northern Lakes Fire District submitted submissions to the Idaho Medal of Honor Commission in person.

The Professional Firefighters of Idaho Facebook said the firefighters were nominated “to ensure the public record accurately reflects the sacrifice and service displayed that day.”

“June 29 was a defining moment for our community and the Fire Service in Idaho, and the actions of Harwood, Morrison, Tysdal, and Wiedenhoff represent the highest standards of duty, courage, and commitment to others,” the Professional Firefighters of Idaho wrote.
