WASHINGTON, D.C. – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Cornyn is set to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday. The meeting precedes ongoing discussions about a free trade agreement between the two nations.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s office highlighted the visit’s focus on “shared priorities and new economic and security relations between the United States.”

At home, Cornyn is facing pressure to negotiate tariff relief. There have been significant discussions over the last several months regarding trade issues.

In Montana, there have been challenges related to trade with feeder calves and agriculture. Similar conversations have occurred in Washington and Idaho, with Washington state estimating roughly $500 million in trade with Canada.

Senator Cantwell has repeatedly stated that the trade discussion has strained the relationship between the two nations.

President Trump has criticized Canada, even suggesting at one point that he would like to make it the 51st state, a notion not favored by Canadians.
