Burdoin Fire threatens 200 buildings near Bingen; highways remain closed

The Burdoin Fire has scorched more than 10,000 acres near Bingen with no containment as of now. The fire has destroyed 14 buildings and threatens over 200 more as it burns north and northeast through steep terrain.

Fire crews are utilizing several aircraft to drop water from the Columbia River to aid in firefighting efforts. One firefighter was injured and has been hospitalized.

The Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office expanded level three “go now” evacuations on the northwest corner of the fire yesterday. These evacuations remain in place and are highlighted in red on the provided map. Other evacuation notices have not changed since Saturday.

Two emergency shelters have been established, one in White Salmon, Washington and another in The Dalles, Oregon.

Highway 14 remains closed for 10 miles east of Bingen. Additional closures include Highway 142 from Highway 14 north to milepost five, and Centerville Highway from Highway 14 to Centerville.

Klickitat County Emergency Management says the Burdoin Fire is now 10,730 acres.

Current objectives for crews in the area is to limit impacts to communities and infrastructure in Bingen, Lyle, High Prairie and on Yakama Nation lands.

Currently, 56 engines, five dozers and four helicopters are in use with 417 total personnel. The fire is still 0 percent contained.

Highways 14 and 142 remain closed and drivers are asked to take alternate routes.

UPDATE: July 20 at 1:22 p.m.

The fire has expanded to an estimated 8,776 acres with no containment.

Steady winds and gusts up to 25 mph are expected to push the fire north and northeast.

Approximately 250 structures are currently threatened. More crews are arriving.

Highway 14 and Highway 142 remain closed in areas near the fire, and travelers are advised to find alternate routes.

One firefighter is receiving treatment for an unknown injury.

UPDATE: July 20, 1:22 p.m.:

Klickitat remains under a Level 1 “Get Ready” evacuation notice as a fire burns several miles away in the Klickitat River Canyon near the Centerville Hwy area, according to Klickitat Fire District 12.

Residents should be aware that smoke levels in town are likely to increase throughout the day. However, there is no active fire in the immediate vicinity of the town, according to KFD 12.

KFD 12 has deployed fire resources to provide structure protection along the lower portions of Hwy 142 near Lyle. Additional fire resources are remaining in town to ensure safety.

July 19, 2025 at 11:03 p.m.

According to the Southeat Washington Interagency Incident Management Team (SWIIMT), the Burdoin Fire has expanded dramatically, and is now burning approximately 6,506 acres, while remaining at 0% containment.

SWIIMT reported that 37 primary structures have been damaged, while 14 have been destroyed. Additionally, 50 minor structures have been damaged, and 30 destroyed.

Evacuation zones at levels one, two and three have been expanded as a result of the fire’s growth. The evacuation zones can be seen in the updated map below.

Officials reported that Highway 14 remains closed from mile marker 66, east of Bingen, to mile mark 76, west of Lyle. Highway 142 has also been closed down from Highway 14 North to mile post 5. Additionally, Centerville Highway has been closed from Highway 14 to Centerville. Drivers are urged to avoid these areas.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced that U.S. 197 is closed to commercial vehicles and all vehicles over 10,000 gross vehicle weight between milepost zero, near the Oregon State Line, and milepost 3.1 near State Route 14.

Detours have been established in the area for drivers traveling eastbound and westbound. Eastbound travelers can use the Hood River Bridge, while westbound travelers can access the U.S. 97 Sam Hill Memorial Bridge or U.S. 197 Dalles Bridge.

Windy conditions are predicted to continue, with the possibility of 25 mile-per-hour wind gusts throughout Sunday afternoon, increasing the chances of the fire spreading even further.

A temporary flight restriction has been implemented over the fire. Any unauthorized aircraft, including drones, flying through the area will put firefighting resources and lives at risks by forcing firefighting aircraft to be grounded.

Walla Walla County Fire District Eight announced that the Tender 3833 vessel and Firefighter Time Daves, along with a Wildland Engine from Walla Walla Fire District Four, have been dispatched as part of the Southeast Washington Strike Team, to fulfill the requested State Mobilization and help battle the Burdoin Fire. This request came from the State Fire Marshall’s Office.

KLICKITAT COUNTY, Wash. – A fire burning near Lyle has grown to 1,276 acres and Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuation orders have been given for those in the area. Officers are calling this the Burdoin Fire.

Highway 14 is also closed from just east of Bingen at MP66 to Highway 142 in Lyle.

Two Red Cross Emergency Shelters are available. On the west side, a shelter is located at Columbia High School in the C Court Building. On the east side, there is a shelter at The Dalles Middle School in The Dalles, Oregon on East 12 Street.

For livestock and animal evacuations and shelter assistance, people can contact Klickitat County Emergency Operations Center.

The fire is burning on both sides of highway 14 and has threatened several structures. Structural protection is a high priority for firefighters arriving on the scene.

Aircraft will be operating in the area, as well as ground crews.

A fire train is also working along the railroad tracks, extinguishing fire along the rail line that runs by the Columbia River.

The fire is 0% contained but Washington State Department of Natural Resources, Washington State Fire Mobilization, West Klickitat Regional Fire Authority, Klickitat County Fire District 4 – Lyle and the US Forest Service are all at the scene to combat the fire.

Crews are working on assessing for damaged structures in the fire area.

People are asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes if they must travel that way. A temporary flight restriction has also been set up for firefighter safety.
