AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — A brush fire that burned around 2 acres in Airway Heights on Thursday was contained, according to Spokane County Fire District 10.

Assistant Chief Andres Steevens said the fire was reported around 4:13 p.m. and was caused by a racing vehicle that left the raceway and entered nearby brush after the driver lost control. The vehicle did not flip, and no injuries were reported.

The fire did not threaten any structures, and forward progress was quickly stopped.

Crews from the Department of Natural Resources, Spokane Fire Department, Airway Heights Fire Department, and Spokane County Fire District 10 responded to the scene. Firefighters remained on-site for mop-up operations.

Steevens said incidents like this are highly unusual, noting that the raceway is typically well-lined and the driver appears to have accidentally gotten through a barrier.
