SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane nonprofit Breast Intentions will host its annual Bra-lloween fundraiser in Spokane on October 30 to raise funds to support women in need.
Christina Weaver, who started Breast Intention, said the impact that a simple undergarment can have on a woman’s dignity. Breast Intentions began as her initiative dedicated to donating bras to women in need.
Weaver and her team of volunteers visit shelters and groups for underprivileged women. They bring racks of undergarments, fit and measure the women, and provide each with two new bras.
Carrie Jongeward, who received a fitting through the program, shared her experience.
“I got pretty bad in my addiction and things and didn’t care for myself let alone I had pushed away anybody that would have cared for me too,” Jongeward said. “So I was pretty destitute and lonely. So to come in and then to have somebody stranger care for me was very heartfelt and I appreciated it.”
The personalized fitting experience and the new bras give women a boost in confidence.
“I didn’t think that just a little bra could make me feel so much better stand up straighter like she even said,” Jongeward said.
“They feel confident going to work. They feel confident going into a job interview. They feel confident picking up their children from school going to the grocery store just normal everyday things that they don’t feel like they have to hide that they can be who they are and strong and confident,” Weaver said.
Weaver emphasized the importance of funding and volunteers in making Breast Intentions successful.
The Bra-lloween fundraiser will take place at the Montvale on Thursday night. Tickets are still available for those interested in supporting the cause. For more information on purchasing tickets or volunteering, visit the Breast Intentions website.
