SPOKANE, Wash. – A morning bomb scare at the Safeway on Mission and Hamilton in Spokane temporarily led to evacuations.
Around 7:30 a.m., a man entered the store claiming he found a bomb near the premises. He had wrapped the device in a bag and brought it inside, immediately notifying Safeway staff.
Safeway employees acted quickly by contacting the Spokane bomb squad and evacuating everyone through the back of the store.
Lieutenant Pronegar, the Bomb Squad commander, shared that upon arrival, the device appeared real enough to warrant concern. The squad dissected the device and determined there was no threat to the public.
Authorities can’t confirm at this time if this was a bomb, but noted it looked like one, Pronegar said.
With the situation under control, Safeway has since reopened. Authorities are still working to identify the man who reported the bomb.
