Boise transgender athlete challenges Idaho sports law at Supreme Court

BOISE, Idaho – Idaho’s Fairness in Women’s Sports Act is being legally challenged by a transgender athlete from Boise. The law requires in-school sports teams to be designated based on biological sex.

Governor Little signed the bill in 2020. However, the athlete argued it violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and sought to have the case dismissed as moot due to personal and academic challenges.

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case last year, consolidating it with a similar case from West Virginia. This comes amid the Trump administration’s open support for restrictions on transgender athletes.

An executive order from February 2025 directed federal agencies to withdraw funding from schools allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports.
