WASHINGTON STATE – As the fall bird migration progresses, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has reported an increase in bird flu cases this month. The avian influenza virus spreads quickly through bird saliva, droppings and contaminated surfaces.
As flocks travel south, they can spread the virus to other birds along their route. Officials stated that peak flu season has commenced and are advising hunters to take necessary precautions.
Hunters should wear disposable gloves when cleaning game. It is important to avoid eating, drinking or smoking while handling birds. Additionally, washing hands, tools and surfaces followed by disinfection with a bleach solution is recommended.
Officials advise against touching any sick or dead birds. However, they note that the risk to hunting dogs remains low.
