Bear Lake Park undergoes safety improvements after wheelchair incident

Spokane, Wash. – A significant transformation has taken place at Bear Lake Park following a harrowing incident three years ago.

Fred Margiotta recalls the day vividly.

“There was a retaining wall on the other side of the lake and the retaining wall gave away,” he said. Fred, who uses a wheelchair, found himself in a life-threatening situation.

“And all I could remember was holding my breath, and I was stuck in my wheelchair–I couldn’t get out.”

Thanks to four people who jumped in to help, Fred is here today.

“I don’t think I’d be here. I really don’t,” he expressed with gratitude.

The incident led to a series of changes at the park. Doug Chase explained the process.

“We spent about two years through the design and permitting process and another year under construction,” he said.

The park was closed for a year to make these changes a reality. Chase emphasized the importance of the improvements.

“We had to very intentionally include and design fishing piers that are strategically located in three different areas on the lake to allow for that access in a safe manner.”

Lonnie Hamer, a long-time visitor, expressed his appreciation for the upgrades.

“Those who lived to see this today is just been amazing. I’m so grateful,” he stated.

Fred also finds comfort in the improvements.

“My favorite part is they got more fishing docks for the people,” he said.

The park is set to reopen to the public on Friday.
