Avalanche danger rises in Idaho Panhandle due to new snow and rain

IDAHO — Avalanche danger in the Idaho Panhandle is considerable, according to the Friends of the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center. New dense snow and rain have added weight to slabs on weak snow layers, making them more sensitive.

The weather forecast indicates that an upper trough will move across the Inland Northwest tonight and Monday, bringing a new round of precipitation. Mountain areas can expect snow, while lowland regions will see rain.

The highest chance of precipitation will be from this afternoon to early evening in the mountains. It will then form a line of precipitation moving from near the Cascades to eastern Washington and Idaho from late evening into Monday morning. The activity is expected to retreat back into the mountains afterward.

The Cascade Crest could see several inches of snow from this evening through Monday morning, with lighter amounts in other mountain areas. Additionally, winds are expected to decrease this evening, and patchy fog might develop tonight and early Monday, particularly in outlying areas and sheltered valleys.
