PULLMAN, Wash. – The Apple Cup rivalry game is set to take place in Pullman Saturday, capturing the attention of sports enthusiasts across the state. This historic game, which has been a staple in Washington’s sports calendar, is now explored in Bud Withers’ new book “Too Good to be Through.”
Withers, a Washington State University alum, has long been fascinated by the Apple Cup rivalry. He came up with the idea for the book in the ’90s, realizing there was no comprehensive account of what he considers the nation’s most iconic rivalry.
“It’s one of those things that brings people together in the state, some might say it also divides them and that may be true to a point but it brings us together, it’s the major sporting event on the calendar every year actually,” Withers said.
The book delves into the differences that make Washington State University and the University of Washington perfect rivals. From contrasting climates and population sizes to differing school curriculums and politics, these elements contribute to the intense rivalry.
Despite the Huskies holding a two-thirds victory majority in the 125-year-long series, the Apple Cup continues to draw significant attention each year.
For those interested in diving deeper into this storied rivalry, Withers’ book is available online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It can also be found in person at local bookstores, including Auntie’s in downtown Spokane.
