Apartment fire in Hillyard neighborhood caused by cigarette

UPDATE: May 19 at 3:30 p.m.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Firefighters have extinguished the fire and confirmed it was started by an improperly disposed cigarette, according to Public Information Officer Justin de Ruyter.

Ruyter said the cigarette lit a bin on fire, causing flames to spread from the apartment balcony to the attic.

Six adults and two children were not injured, but have been displaced due to the extent of the damage. They’re receiving assistance from the American Red Cross .

Ruyter said the roof of the building will need replacement due to the damage.

The Spokane Fire Department recommends properly disposing of cigarettes by dousing them in water to ensure they are completely out, preventing similar incidents in the future.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department is currently tackling an apartment fire near the 2900 block of East Decatur Ave.

Reports of the fire were received at approximately 12:15 p.m. Currently, there is no information available regarding the cause of the fire or any injuries.
