OMAK, Wash. – The annual Omak Stampede Rodeo is underway, attracting thousands of visitors to the town. This event is renowned for the Suicide Race, a thrilling 200-foot downhill horse race into the Okanogan River.

More than a dozen jockeys are set to compete each night this weekend.

Animal rights groups have expressed concerns over horse safety in the race. However, organizers emphasized the historical significance of the Suicide Race to the community. They assure that rigorous steps are taken to ensure that horses meet safety and qualification standards.

In addition to the rodeo and the Suicide Race, the event also features a Native encampment, art shows, a carnival and numerous food and souvenir vendors.
