SEATTLE, Wash. – Attorney General Nick Brown, along with attorneys general from 19 other states and the District of Columbia, issued a statement following the U.S. Supreme Court’s hearing on birthright citizenship.

The coalition defended birthright citizenship, emphasizing its 127-year precedent. “For 127 years, since the Supreme Court settled the issue, the law has been clear: if you are born in this country, you are a citizen of the United States and of our States,” the statement read.

The attorneys general criticized the Trump Administration’s argument, stating it would disrupt established law and practice. They asserted, “The President cannot rewrite the Constitution and contradict the Supreme Court’s own holdings with the stroke of a pen.”

Joining Brown were attorneys general from states including Arizona, California, and New York, among others. The coalition stands united against changes to birthright citizenship, reinforcing its constitutional significance.
