Adams Elementary rebuild brings excitement and nostalgia in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – As the one-year mark of the “Together Spokane” initiative approaches, notable progress is being made in the city’s modernization efforts for schools and parks. Construction crews have begun demolishing the old Adams Elementary School, built in 1909, marking the first visible changes of the initiative.

Students from Adams Elementary have been relocated to Jefferson Elementary, now referred to as “Camp Adams,” while the rebuild project is underway. Ollie, a student at Adams Elementary, shared his feelings about the transition.

“We just were seeing the gym being torn down, like it’s so sad, but it’s also really cool at the same time like we’re getting a new school,” said Ollie.

The Spokane Public School District estimates that the construction will take about a year and a half to complete. Until then, students like Ashby are reflecting on their experiences at the old school.

“We’ve just been saying oh, it’s so crazy to see that our school is going to be torn down and it’s been here for so long,” said Ashby.

Despite the nostalgia, students are finding enjoyment in their temporary home at Camp Adams. Ollie expressed his positive experience at the new location.

“It’s been very good it’s very fun, it’s like very, we can, like, it’s just like the old building,” said Ollie.

The transition has brought mixed emotions as students remember their activities in the old gym.

“We were playing like football and hockey in that gym and just seeing it all come down… So crazy,” said Ollie.

Both Ollie and Ashby are excited about the future of their new school.

“I have a lot of memories but I’m glad that we’re getting a new school, it’ll just be better,” said Ollie.

The Spokane Public School District is committed to ensuring students will have a modern and improved learning environment to return to.
