SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman who they said stole a car and lied to deputies that the car belonged to her “boyfriend.”

On March 27 at around 2 p.m., A Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy received an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Flock Alert and found the reported stolen vehicle parked near Market and Farwell.

As a deputy approached the car, it was confirmed to be a silver 2007 Suzuki XL7 SUV, which had been reported as stolen.

The driver, later identified as 50-year-old Dawn D. Sherman was detained by deputies pending further investigation. Sherman was advised of her rights and agreed to answer questions.

She stated the vehicle belonged to her “boyfriend” and provided the registered owner/victim’s first name but was incorrect on his last. She explained she had been in contact with the victim recently, but her version of events changed as she continued.

Dawn was A check of Sherman’s name revealed a confirmed felony warrant (Robbery 1st and Motor Vehicle Theft) where the victim had initially reported the Suzuki stolen. During that incident on January 21, he said that he was helping Sherman, who he described as a friend.

She was homeless, and he let her visit his home occasionally to clean up, change clothes, and eat. As he napped on the couch, Sherman became upset and started yelling. Her anger intensified, and she punched him in the face, grabbed the keys to his vehicle, and ran out the front door.

The 60-year-old disabled victim tried to catch her, but by the time he made it outside, she was driving off in his vehicle. He confirmed he wanted to pursue charges and did not allow Sherman to take his SUV.

Dawn was arrested and booked to Spokane County Jail for First Degree Robbery and Theft of a Motor Vehicle charges.
