MILAN, Italy – Days into the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, several winning athletes have faced an unexpected issue: their medals are breaking. This includes Team USA’s first gold.
American skier Breezy Johnson and figure skater Alysa Liu reported that their medals detached from the ribbons. Johnson advised her fellow athletes, “not jump while wearing their medals,” she said.
Olympic organizers addressed the issue at a press conference, stating they are “fully aware of the situation” and are investigating possible causes.
