SEATTLE, Wash. – Researchers from the University of Washington (UW) have discovered eight bee species that have never been recorded in the state before.
According to a report from the university in September 2025, Autumn Maust, a UW research scientist of biology, collaborated with expert taxonomists from the United States and Canada to identify the bees.
Referring to “detailed sets of characteristics,” taxonomists helped Maust identify the Dianthidium singulare, Osmia cyaneonitens, Dufourea dilatipes, Melissodes nigracauda, Stelis heroine, and other bee species for the first time in Washington state history.
More information on Maust’s research and photographs of some of the new species discovered in the state can be found on the UW website.
