More than 5.2 million above-ground pools sold in the U.S. and Canada over the past two decades are being recalled following reports of nine child drownings, federal safety officials announced Monday.
The recall affects various models of Bestway, Intex and Polygroup pools sold at major retailers since 2002, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.
Officials say a design flaw—a strip along the outside of the pools—has allowed children to climb into the water unsupervised, leading to fatalities between 2007 and 2022.
Consumers are urged to contact Bestway, Intex or Polygroup for a free repair kit.
