HARTLINE, Wash. – A three-year-old child found a live hand grenade in his family’s front yard on Monday evening, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).

The boy brought the grenade in to his parents, who called 911 at around 6:45 p.m. The Washington State Patrol bomb squad responded.

GCSO said bomb techs determined that the grenade was live, and transported it to a rural area north of town to dispose of.

“The grenade was of a type used during the Second World War and had clearly been exposed to the elements for some time,” GCSO said. “It’s not known how the grenade ended up in the family’s front yard, nor how long it had been there.”
