SANDPOINT, Idaho — Local veterans are coming together for some therapeutic sailing, racing, food, fun and most importantly camaraderie. It’s all made possible thanks to Dogsmile Adventures, the Spokane Veterans Forum, and volunteers.
This is year two of the annual event titled the ‘Petty Officer Preston Johnson, USN Veterans Regatta’ that both celebrates the legacy and service of the fallen veteran. Johnson was just 20-years-old when he passed away in 2022.
Preston’s father, Judge Patrick Johnson, looks forward to the event all year. He says the love and support mean the world to him.
“I am grateful for the volunteers and veterans for coming out and contributing to therapeutic sailing,” Judge Johnson said. “Mental health among our veteran community is a personal issue for my family. This event is a great way to honor the memory of our son, Preston Johnson.”
The event is free for veterans who were required to sign up ahead of time. Participants are being treated to a sailing experience starting at Windbag Marina in Sandpoint, followed by lunch, awards, and inspiring speeches.
The event is one of many Dogsmile Adventures puts on every single year to try to “change lives through sailing.” To learn more about or support the nonprofit, click: https://www.dogsmileadventures.org/
