SAGLE, Idaho – One person was killed and another injured in a structure fire on Sunday morning on Gold Mountain Drive. An investigation determined the fire was caused by a wood stove.
According to Selkirk Fire, the initial call was made at 10:29 a.m. and the first engine arrived in under 11 minutes.
When firefighters entered the residence, which Selkirk Fire described as being heavily involved in fire, they found one person inside a bedroom who was pronounced dead.
A neighbor was also found critically injured at the scene after attempting to rescue the person inside. She was transported to a hospital by a Life Flight helicopter.
“Today’s fire reflects a worst-case scenario for our community,” Selkirk Fire Chief Armstrong said in a press release. “We grieve with the friends and family of the victim.”
The cause of the fire was determined to be a wood stove in the living room, according to Selkirk Fire.
“We would like to take this opportunity to remind homeowners to have their wood stoves serviced and inspected each year, have repairs made by a reputable and licensed contractor, and always maintain clearance around the wood stove free of flammable materials when in use,” the department said.
